About SourceCode Communications

What began in 2017 as an idea on the back of a napkin has quickly become an award-winning, fastest-growing communications firm working with some big-name consumer and B2B technology brands. At SourceCode, we’re focused on bringing brains and hustle, humanity and technology, creativity and business intelligence back to public relations. We fundamentally believe that what engages a brand’s audiences are the depth and authenticity of the stories they tell.

A Day in Life: Josiah Chambers, Account Coordinator

My first official full-time job at SourceCode has been fulfilling and has presented me with both challenges and successes. Contrary to the popular belief that the communications field isn’t easy, it’s probably the most rewarding job one could ever have. I have the opportunity to work with some of the most brilliant minds (coworkers and clients alike) to try and influence positive change in the world which is why the decision to pursue a role in public relations has felt like the right decision every day.

If you told me in January 2019, when I first began interning, that I would be working full-time, from home, every day in 2022, I would think that that was absurd. I consider myself a traditional introvert but I definitely thrive around people- this is probably due to the fact that I moved a fair amount throughout my childhood and had to constantly adapt to new environments and people.

It can sometimes be hard to foster connections with remote teammates but in my experience at SourceCode, I’ve been surrounded by a team of rockstar mentors that care about seeing me grow both professionally and personally. While a large volume of my day-to-day work is focused on account management and communications with the client - it’s imperative that I know what’s going on so that I can adeptly communicate status to all of my teammates at a moment’s notice.

Weekly meetings with your teams or managers may seem futile but in a remote environment, taking the time to personally connect with a colleague and decompress together can make an incredible impact on everyone’s mental health. For example, if I have a question for a team member that could be explained in a few minutes, rather than going back and forth on Slack or email, I ask them to hop on a quick call to avoid any drop off in messaging or direction and to truly connect with them further as a human.

Not only does taking this moment ensure you have your ducks in a row but it also solidifies that you and your team are on the same page and will in turn, keep your account leads and the client happy. Further, as long as you act with diligence, respect and transparency, your company leadership and peers will be satisfied and seek new opportunities to collaborate with you and find innovative ways to help you grow and develop.

Working remotely at SourceCode has truly surpassed my expectations. This ‘way of life’ has provided me with a much-desired balance in these often uncertain times; many people are promised but not truly given this gift. I’ve been able to travel and see most, if not all, of my extended family and friends since June all while improving my PR skills and progressing in the first chapter of my professional/post-college life. This is a testament to the awesome remote work environment I am privileged to be in every single day thanks to the leadership and peer-mentorship I have experienced at SourceCode.

With Gratitude as I’ve Grown: The SourceCode Leaders Who Have Impacted My Career

As we approach the time of year where it's customary to think about the things we're grateful for, I have taken some time to reflect on the gratitude I have for my role here at SourceCode. Since I joined in February 2019, I've been promoted three times but my gratitude comes down to so much more than a job title. What I'm most grateful for has been the growth I've experienced as a professional, which has by and large been prompted by the people I'm lucky enough to work with here.

When I joined SourceCode, we were a close-knit, 10-person team. That was a great opportunity to work closely with everyone at the company, regardless of what people's titles were. Because of that unique experience, I can confidently say I learned more here in my first year than all the years I'd spent at other jobs combined.

I'd also like to take the time to reflect on a piece of advice my colleague Nicole gave me that has stuck with me throughout these past (almost) 4 years. She taught me not to take things personally. Since the public relations industry centers around driving results for your clients, it's easy to attach your entire identity to the work you achieve. That always feels great on the good days, but not so great on those inevitable days you're struggling to break through on a certain project or account.

Looking back, I’m so grateful for Nicole and the advice she has given me. Her mentorship has taught me to achieve a healthy balance of taking pride in my work and caring about it deeply while also being able to take every day as a lesson and root my sense of self in my character instead of my career.

Leaving Breadcrumbs: SourceCode Superstars Share Their Best Career Advice

Throughout my career in communications I’ve been given a lot of great advice on how to not only succeed but leave people with a positive impression of both your work ethic and who you are as a person. This advice along with the experiences I’ve had, have helped me outline two key areas that I feel are important to prioritize in your career:

Be a Chameleon: The world is constantly changing, as we’ve all realized even more over the past few years, and with that comes evolving needs from your organization and the clients you work with. Demonstrating the ability to lend your hand in areas that might not be directly in your wheelhouse during times of change is an invaluable skill that goes a long way with both colleagues and clients. It can also often lead to new opportunities and areas of interest to explore within your career that you didn’t even know were possible.

Invest in People: If I was asked to identify the most rewarding part of my job, it would easily be the opportunity to help mentor and manage the incredibly talented people that I work with. Taking the time to listen, answer questions and offer advice and guidance on work hurdles but also personal challenges, as well as celebrating growth and wins is an important part of building the relationships that will stick with you throughout your career.

Taking a moment to remember how I can make a positive impact by evolving what I do every day and being a malleable support for the team, shows direct reports and peers alike how committed I am to the future of our company and how much pride I take in my own professional growth. By leading with this example, I hope that others will follow suit and find new and creative ways to engage with internal and external shareholders and push the success of SourceCode forward!

Leading the Industry in Salary Transparency

Being human is both a company value and a guiding principle in how we inform and support our current staff as well as how we hire future employees. Ingrained in that value is trust and transparency which we showcase across our internal teams daily and exemplify with our external audience as often as possible.

When it had been announced that companies across NYC (larger than 4 employees) would be required to state salary rates on all job postings as of Fall 2022, we truly weren’t fazed. Our mission has always been to provide our current and future team members with all necessary data to ensure they have all the information they need to make informed decisions. Core to our ethos is business transparency, a prioritization of enabling people to understand career trajectory, and most importantly a focus on bringing your full self to the table. This new requirement simply felt natural and intrinsic with who we are as an employer.

In fact, in late 2021, we were one step ahead of the initiative when we provided our staff with our salary bands for each role following an internal audit and market research. We have taken this approach one step further and currently provide interviewees with the same data in the initial stages of the hiring process, furthering our commitment to our values rooted in transparency.

Shying away from this reporting seems out of line with what we value and we fully embrace and appreciate its purpose. The accountability that showcasing salary targets in job postings provides, allows us to anchor decision making (both for the candidate and ourselves) in solid data. It also ensures that our current team is appropriately and competitively compensated for the incredible work that they do.

Hillary Ephraim, our Head of Talent Acquisition, noted “it matters a great deal that I can confidently lead with dependable marketplace data. I am providing target salary rates to hires that are aligned with industry standards and therefore, providing the most competitive, data-centered and thoughtful hiring package that we can”.

Leaving Breadcrumbs: SourceCode Superstars Share Their Best Career Advice

By Rachel Dix-Kessler, Director, Media Strategy & Analytics

One of our greatest opportunities in life is the ability to learn. Fortunately, my career has been a great educator, personally and professionally. Here are two lessons I’ve learned that I’ve always come back to:

Create your own path
We’re all exposed to societal expectations as we go through life. I’ve always felt the pressure to meet ‘life milestones’ based on what I think I’m supposed to do and where I think I should be in my career. Through my past experiences, I’ve realized that sometimes the best path isn’t the one others choose for you, but one that you make for yourself. Identify the things you love to do and find a company that is willing to help you build that path.

Always be authentic
One of my favorite things about public relations has been the opportunity to meet new people and build relationships. Outside of work, I’ve spent a lot of time figuring out who I am, and then accepting that person. Whether you’re talking to a leader, colleague, or client, show up as that person you’ve worked so hard to be and accept them. You’ll be so much happier in your career and find that the relationships you build will be built on genuine connections and more intentional.

For many of us, our career is a big part of our life. It’s important to build your career around who you are and what you’re passionate about doing. Afterall, it’s YOUR career, not anyone else’s.

A Day in Life: Matthew Chan, Account Executive

Working at SourceCode is like being in a fun time machine. Every day, it teleports me near instantaneously to the end of the day. With today’s news cycle, not a single moment is dull. I work with clients that develop the technology tools for companies operating in the cloud, networking, business management and HR fields. So, naturally, in addition to staying on top of all the new developments, there are many nuances to be learned.

My day to day revolves around crafting pitches and media lists tailored to different outreaches. Following the news is key to being able to write pitches that reporters will want to read, and it helps me identify the reporters covering the right beat. My role is to anticipate what reporters would want to write about, who best to write that story, get them their story, and have my clients featured in them. That’s why closely following the news is pivotal. The other main component of my daily task is client management. At the Account Executive level, it’s all about flagging coverage and relevant industry news to clients as well as drafting agendas and notes to keep everyone on the same page.

As I slowly settle into my fifth month at SourceCode, things have started to become more of a routine. I can now better anticipate what the clients' needs are and I feel far more confident pitching ideas and answering questions proactively. While there is always room for improvement, meaningful progress has been made.

Just with anything in life, practice makes perfect. The good thing is, at SourceCode, there are a lot of knowledgeable and experienced people willing to help and support me along the way!
