Challenge

After bootstrapping since founding, Vultr was ready to announce its first-ever outside investment with a funding round led, in part, by industry heavyweight AMD. The team set out to secure a top-tier exclusive for this massive milestone but, unlike traditional funding announcements, Vultr’s stakeholders didn’t want to disclose the size of the round. Rather, they wanted tier-1 coverage based on the company valuation.

Solution

Leveraging our strong connections with top-tier enterprise tech reporters, we secured initial interest in an exclusive with Belle Lin at the Wall Street Journal. When debates over disclosing the valuation and funding amount ensued, the team coordinated with the client and investors to get the numbers Belle needed for her story, highlighting the importance of sharing the information to achieve our desired outcome. In the eleventh hour, we locked in the exclusive and the feature was published on the Wall Street Journal’s website and in its CIO Journal newsletter. To supplement the exclusive, we also seeded the story to friendlies at CNBC and the Financial Times before pitching widely to additional contacts once the story broke.

Results

We were able to secure a full exclusive feature in the Wall Street Journal, as well as additional top-tier coverage in Reuters, FT, Forbes and CNBC. We also acquired 8 placements in tier-1 technology and business publications.
