Why PR Leaders Must Invest in Rising Talent 

PR leaders build stronger agencies by giving emerging talent meaningful opportunities early in their careers. Empowering junior communications professionals with responsibility, coaching, and client exposure creates better teams, stronger client relationships, and future industry leaders.

Many of the world’s sports fans are immersed in the World Cup, but for me the summer’s all about tennis. At time of writing, Wimbledon is in full swing, and the US Open is just one month away. If you love tennis (and why wouldn’t you?) there’s no better time of year. 

Like most sports, tennis reflects the human condition. It can, at its best, teach us important lessons that we can bring into our lives – both at home and in the office.

Take this year’s titanic French Open thriller between 19-year-old João Fonseca and tennis legend Novak Djokovic as an example. When the youngster stepped onto the court, most people saw only a mismatch. One player, a teenager still establishing himself on the world stage. The other, one of the greatest athletes in the history of the sport (or any sport for that matter). 

Fonseca himself understood the scale of the task ahead. Interviewed prior to the match about his chances, Fonseca said only that he was honored to share the court with Djokovic. However, once the final serve of the match had been played, it was the youngster who emerged victorious. 

Against all the odds, Fonseca had found a way to win.

Seizing the moment

Breakthrough moments like these are not confined to the tennis court. Whether in sports, business, or life, there comes a point when emerging talent must stop waiting for permission to belong. 

Growth happens when you’re willing to compete against established leaders, challenge conventional thinking, and test yourself against the highest standard available. The goal isn’t just to win. It’s to prove that you deserve a permanent seat at the top table. 

The most transformative moments in careers and organizations occur when rising talent embraces the discomfort of competing with the best. For their part, business leaders should do everything in their power to create an environment where the next generation has the confidence to take their shot.

Building a platform for success

This is certainly what we strive to do at SourceCode. From day one, we give even our most junior staff direct access to our leadership team through one-to-one calls with our co-founders. During these calls, we make a simple request: tell us how we can improve the agency.

From the outset, we remove barriers between junior staff and leadership, encouraging open collaboration across all levels. We lay the groundwork through our cultural and social teams, building inter-agency relationships that give our young talent the confidence to speak up in meetings. From that foundation, we empower them with opportunities to pitch ideas and present their achievements directly to clients.

Our approach is to boost the confidence of junior staff members by enabling them to own important media relationships, exposing them to clients and senior team members, and girding their career development with consistent training and development programs. 

However, we are just the support team. As João Fonseca discovered, when that breakthrough moment arrives it’s up to the individual to step up to the plate (or baseline, as the case may be) and make it count.
